A man has been arrested after he allegedly broke into a city restaurant late last night.

About 11.50pm on Friday 28 October, a member of the public contacted police to advise he saw a man behaving suspiciously on Jolleys Lane at Adelaide.  He also noticed a broken restaurant window nearby.  The witness provided a description of the suspect to police who were quickly on scene.

Eastern District patrols spotted a man matching the description running from the area.  The man was seen to throw items in the River Torrens before he jumped in the river himself to evade police.

Patrols positioned themselves on either side of the river and the man eventually swam to the bank where he was arrested without incident.

A 27-year-old man from Hillcrest was charged with serious criminal trespass, theft and unlawful possession.  He was refused police bail and will appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday 31 October.
