If you’re like us, you’re thinking about what you want to do this weekend. To help with that, we’re debuting our newest guide. Every Thursday, we will offer you exactly what the column’s name promises: five things to eat this weekend. We’ve sifted through the newest restaurant openings, events, and limited-run menu items so you don’t have to. This week, we’re excited about veggie curry, some new coconut canelés, an Oktoberfest special with showstopping birria tacos, a splurge-worthy anniversary omakase, and some steak-frites you will be able to get without worrying about Resy. Let’s get to the rundown:
Vegetarian Curry at Mythily (129 Havemeyer St., Williamsburg)
After a two-year run popping up all over the city, chef Rasika Venkatesa and her soul-soothing, slow-roasted eggplant curry — packed with spiced lentils, corn, and sweet peppers— are at last settling down. Scrape up every bit with a tear of housemade paratha or a spoonful of coconut rice.
Steak Au Poivre at Saint Denis (490 LaGuardia Pl.)
Catty-corner from the still-impossible-to-penetrate Corner Store, Saint Denis offers the same closed-off, high-volume clubhouse experience without a reservation. Order the classic petite steak au poivre with frites and wash it down with a gin martini or four. They do take some reservations but are making a big push for walk-ins, meaning you don’t need a plan for this au poivre.
Coconut Canalés at Calabash (183 Christopher St.)
I’ve been in canalé withdrawal ever since Camari Mick left her post at Raf’s, so you’ll find me at Calabash as soon as her new bakery opens at 8 a.m. Mick & Co. will also offer a five-course prix fixe dinner service starting in a few weeks, and I’m already dreaming about crisp pork belly and green mango chow chow with tahdig jollof.
Anniversary Omakase at Yoshino (342 Bowery)
Far be it from us to suggest you drop a month of rent on sushi, but Yoshino’s fifth-anniversary celebration is a splurge — starting at, ahem, $600 — with a story. Designed as a career retrospective for Tadashi “Edowan” Yoshida, each course references a different milestone, from working alongside his father at his family’s restaurant in Gifu to his transition to New York. (For the real big spenders, reserve sakes and Champagnes are available and will include hard-to-find vintages from the year Yoshida moved to the city.)
Carnitas Ramirez Tacos for Oktoberfest at Grimm’s Brewery and Taproom (990 Metropolitan Ave, East Williamsburg)
Start your weekend early: Tomorrow, from 3 p.m. until they sell out, the Carnitas Ramirez team will be popping up at this popular craft brewery to dish out tacos to celebrate fall’s most famous beer festival and a new collaboration — Mexican-style corn lager infused with fresh masa.
