ATFT Food Photography Workshops

I eat. I shoot. And I will show you how, my way.

When I started this food blog back in 2008, it was all just a bit of fun by capturing my gastronomic journey in Sydney and around the world through photography. And I’m sure I am not the only one with the same passion based on the sudden growth of food blogs in Australia just within the last two years alone.

There are already a lot of great food blogs in Australia with extensive restaurant reviews, amazing recipes; and for me, the only thing that I can do best to compensate my pedestrian writing skills is my food photography. I thank you all for keep reading my blog and drool over my photos and still coming back for more. Slowly readers’ admiration becomes questions, I started receiving comments and emails asking me about my photos and here are some questions that I am sure we are all too familiar with:

  • “What camera and lens do you use?”
  • “It’s so dark inside the restaurant, how come your photos still turned out so sharp and bright?”
  • “Why my photos from restaurant are always so yellow?”
  • “Do you use flash when you take photos in the restaurant?”
  • “What program do you use to edit your photos?”
  • “How to make my photos blog and search engine friendly?”

Don’t worry, I will show you. Come and join me for an intimate food photography workshop and enjoy an exquisite lunch at MUMU Grill.

I will be running two food photography workshops on the 17th & 24th April 2010, held at the exclusive private dining room at MUMU Grill in Crows Nest. These classes are designed for foodies, food bloggers or simply anyone who wants to take better food photos that are drool-worthy.

In this 3 hour intimate food photography workshop, we will cover some basic techniques on how to use your digital cameras, sharing tips on how to take photos in restaurants, step-by-step demonstration on how to bring your photos to life from camera to blog on a big projector screen! And also, how to make your images blog-ready and search engine friendly. The class is limit to maximum of 15 attendees only, so it will be intimate but casual, informative and plenty of personal attention.

During the course of the workshop, you will also be joining me for an exquisite lunch prepared by chef Craig Macindoe. The lunch is covered in the cost of the workshop, WIN WIN! So, make sure you bring your cameras along as we will have some hands on practice on the dishes that day!

Lunch courses

Tapas
Bread and dips
figs with goat cheese and prosciutto.
18 month jamon
Black rusian tomato salad with buffalo mozzarella
T- bone tagliatta with duck fat potato and greens
Dessert platter

* All dishes to share among attendees.

WOW Billy, is there nothing you can’t do?! T-shirts, Chocolate and now Photographic Workshops. where do you find the time mate :-) this is great timing because i’ve been wanting to post some tips about how to take better food photos which I hope to do this week — if i find the time. i can even mention your workshop for the professional option. it’s a great concept of having MUMU Grill involved. all your questions are very valid and will be touched on eventually in my post. Here’s my answers:
    • What camera and lens do you use? – I use a Compact Canon Ixus 7.0 but you use a OMG High End Digital SLR :-) so jealous but at least i can fit mine in my pocket HEHE!
    • It’s so dark inside the restaurant, how come your photos still turned out so sharp and bright? for me it’s ALOT of photoshop work to compensate for my compact digital and making sure you try and get a focussed shot to start with.
    • Why my photos from restaurant are always so yellow? – have to remember to set my tungsten setting on camera to compensate or change the bulbs in the restaurant when they’re not looking :-)
    • Do you use flash when you take photos in the restaurant? – sometimes i need to because of my camera but i’d imagine you don’t need to or only for slow flash lighting to help. you can’t beat a digital SLR for low lighting conditions. unfortunately i have to find ways around this with a compact digital which i’ll post about.
    • What program do you use to edit your photos? i can’t think of anything but Adobe Photoshop the industry standard. but i guess not everyone but i’m sure there’s some free software out there with some image editing capabilities?
    • How to make my photos blog and search engine friendly? does this mean adding metadata tags? i’ve never thought about this but maybe i should be.

Wow Simon, long comment. But I have to disagree with the comparison between compact digital and DSLRs. Yes DSLRs definitely have its advantages, well is called a “professional” camera afterall, you get what you paid for. But I cant see why a compact digital camera can’t do a better job. There are many ways you can get around it.
This post for instance, is shot on my digital compact camera.

You just need to know what you are doing. But come for the food anyway, I’ve heard Chef Mumu is amazing with his grass fed t-bone tagliatta!

  22. Vanessa Pike-Russell April 14, 2010 at 1:40 pm #

Any interest in taking it on the road?
I can book out Wollongong’s best restaurant voted by Illawarra Food blog viewers. A french restaurant called Caveau that does degustation menus and cookery school.

A train from Sydney Central station to Wollongong Station then a quick walk around the corner to Caveau. If it was on a Friday there is the Friday Produce Market in Wollongong Mall. Interested?

Thanks for the class dude. There’s a reasonable amount that I’d learned from the class that I’d not known previously.

Will be good to see how the lessons learned during the class will help improve things to come.

For anyone thinking about signing up when the next lot of classes are announced, do so. It’s worth it.
