ATFT Food Tee February Edition is hot out of the oven!

First of all, I would like to thank everyone, especially to the happy owners of the first ATFT t-shirt last month, for all the support and feedback I’ve been given on this little project. For those who don’t know what I am talking about or first time visiting this blog, please do pay a visit of the ATFT shop and check out the limited edition ATFT t-shirts where some of the profits from every purchase will go to charity. And if you are a food blogger, you might like to take part of this fun project and be the next featured food blogger along with the t-shirt. It is All-About-You!

And this month t-shirt is inspired by one of the most exciting Sydney food bloggers, Sheryl (or ‘Shez’) from One Bite More! Shez, the self-claimed “mini-Malaysian-Aunty-in-training“, is a Malaysian Chinese who now resides in Sydney, Australia. Her blog is gorgeous and down to earth, the only way that I can describe it – is like a home cooked meal, it gives you that warm fuzzy feeling inside. But it is Shez’s bubbly and exuberant personality with her wicked writinng style that makes me keep coming back for more.

Here’s a fun Q&As to get up close and personal with Shez at One Bite More.

February Featured Foodie – One Bite More

1. When did you decide to become a food blogger?

I’ve been blogging on and off since the end of 1999, though most of it at that time consisted of teen-angsty rants! Luckily (or perhaps unluckily) for everyone around me, I found food blogs and fell in love with the balance of focused, factual writing and the personal character that came out in each of them – oh! And they were about food! Win!

So after a half hearted attempt at starting my own food blog in 2006, I kicked up a gear and started onebitemore in January 2009. Best. Decision. Ever. (Well, maybe not ever, but it was certainly a very good decision).

2. Why the name “onebitemore”?

I’m horrifically gluttonous and (according to some) a mini-Malaysian-Aunty-in-training. Have you ever tried to tell a Malaysian Aunty that you’re full? It’s an impossible task. My mother is one of the best, she once made my youngest cousin cry from fear of overconsumption. True Story.

3. What is the ultimate comfort food to you?

Bakuteh. It’s this crazy pork bone soupy stewy thing with herbs and spices – some of my earliest memories involve being woken up at 6am to eat bakuteh with my Ah-Kong and rubbing the sleep out of my eyes as I dipped fried dough sticks into the gravy left over at the end. (Oh-no-I-think-I’m-tearing-up!)

You can read all about it here

4. What is your signature dish to impress?

I once got a boy to meet up with me by promising him green tea macaron… *blush*

Honestly though, my broccoli & cauliflower soup. As far as I’m concerned, it tastes like getting a big, fat cuddle from your favourite person in the world. (In front of a fireplace. Whilst wearing your favourite grey trackies. And you haven’t seen them in 10 years. I’ll stop now.) And it’s ridiculously easy to make – which makes it all the better.

5. If there is no more food in this world, what would you do to survive?

Rummage through my grandma’s handbag. There is always something to eat in there. Especially when you’ve just eaten your body weight in food. Y’know that thing I said about Malaysian Aunties? It applies to Malaysian Grannies too.

6. If you can have one bite more ONLY, what would it be?

A very, very large one.

(I’m suddenly very, very hungry.)

7. Chocolate, chilli, lemon – use your wildest imagination and come up with your own signature dish.

I’m a big fan of citrus, so let’s start with a lemon curd mousse on a crumbly chocolate shortbread base. We’ll enrobe the lot in a thin layer of glossy dark chocolate and dress the plate with a tart lemon syrup and streaks of chilli chocolate ganache.

Or, we could just crush the chilli, pour some rum over it, strain into a glass of ice with a squeeze of lemon juice and eat the chocolate on the side. You choose.

8. What chef has been your inspiration?

If I say my mum one more time, your readers will probably revolt and start throwing things at their computer screens… Tell you what, I met Tom Kime about halfway through last year and my head almost exploded. The man is ridiculous. He has one of the best attitudes towards food I’ve ever encountered, and my-word-does-he-understand flavour! He uses basic ingredients with basic techniques and creates meals so good you want to eat all of your own serve then steal the scraps off your neighbour’s plate.

9. What did you have for breakfast this morning?

*mumbles* Apeachandachocolatecoveredscotchfinger *mumbles* In my defence, I normally have a bowl of muesli with natural yoghurt and honey and a piece of fruit, but I kinda ran out… and there were chocolate biscuits in the kitchen…

Oh, the shame!

10. Share your ultimate dining experience that you will never forget.

Y’know, I don’t think I’ve had it yet! I’ve enjoyed so much good food with good people in my little old lifetime that it has all become one big happy blur. When it does pop around though, I’ll be sure to let the world know about it!

11. How do you poach an egg?

Step One: Take egg from fridge. Leave on bench top until it comes to room temperature.

Step Two: Boil water in a small saucepan.

Step Three: Walk up to the Very Tall Boy with a slotted spoon and an egg in hand and keep grinning and nodding until the egg is poached.

Appalling, I know, but if I’m making eggs, they’re soft boiled with soy sauce and pepper. I’ll leave the poaching to the ones who do it better than I.

12. If you are a fruit/vegetable, what would it be and why?

There are certain people out there who already think I’m a bit of a fruit, but I don’t think that answers your question. How about an a-cha-cha… I like to dance!

The “One Bite More” limited edition t-shirts are now available from the ATFT shop. Limited to 50 units only.

noice design. good read of onemorebite too. i’m still trying to perfect the poached egg. have tried many ways but they need to be fresh eggs to work best. i like the gordon ramsay method of swirling the water in a whirlpool then dropping the egg in which gathers on itself. simple and easy and hopefully works most times :-)

ha ha, malaysian chinese fathers are just as bad. My father always ordered two dishes too many to show off and then would not let anyone leave until it was all eaten. As the oldest son I was always expected to do my duty to clean up the last of the meal. These days, I am older and more rebellious.

Maybe I shouldn’t say charity, but the profit is donated to KILT, a landmine victims team in Cambodia who I am fortunate enough to spend a day with, you can read about it here. http://www.atablefortwo.com.au/2010/01/15/postcard-from-cambodia-a-day-at-kilt-part-2/

Lex, you need to hang out more often here when you are not cooking, LOL!
