[...] For some reason, Merivale Winter Feast promotion has never been on the top of my priority list. Don’t get me wrong, one of the items in my to-do list is to tick off all the restaurants in theMerivale group. But I am not sure why, me and Merivale don’t seem to gel very well together after a series of unfortunate events including missing out on the $300 Merivale Chefs gala dinner which clashed with another pre -booked event, then the Winter Feast launch party which fell on the same date as my own photographic exhibition. And even when I made an effort to show up, I was destined to dine elsewhere far worse. [...]

[...] Popiah (薄饼) My all time favorite – HANDS DOWN! Popiah (pronounce – Bo-bee-ahh) is a spring roll variety, but bigger, fattier, filled with lots of different type of vegetable, plus crispy fried tiny shrimps and shallots, together with a sweet sauce, wrapped inside a wafer thin wheat flour pancake. But those I’ve had in Petaling Jaya is not so good, lacking some core ingredients plus a mysterious sauce. But then, I’ve tasted worse. [...]

To be perfectly honest, the Malaya is a restaurant with focal point in pleasing aesthetics first and foremost -and secondly food that is catered for western tastes so as to not intrude on familiar flavours. The Malaya is "soft" asian cuisine designed not to offend.
I dislike this restaurant for its pretence.

Malaysian food in its true authenticity should be served out doors, with plastic seats on round white marble tables, not in some swanky pan cake kitchen with a view...

The Malaya serves "Gweilo" Asian food (sorry not meant to be derogatory). I've been here a few times for work functions and my colleagues love it and praise the cusine endlessly. To me, the food is tasteless and terribly over-priced served on oversized plates to posh things up. Honestly the food you find in the Chinatown foodcourts will be more authentic and delicious. The ambience is nice and service is fine but seriously the food is non-authentic.

I thought $15 for Char Kuey Teow at Chilli Padi in Melbourne is expensive, $22 is way overpriced!
