Bungalow 8 – King Street Wharf, Sydney

The venue is dimly lit; I put the blue wristband on my left wrist, I am ready to rave. Oh yeah… I am ready to rave about the all you can eat mussels at Bungalow 8.

Since after being rejected entry without booking, FFIchiban decided to invite us all again to Bungalow 8 to celebrate his birthday and this time we are determined to have a mussels orgy – a hell lot of it!

A kilo of Laksa mussels in Belgium pot

The all-you-can-eat-mussels is only available on Tuesday and only if you have made a booking before 7pm. At only $22.50, you will be able to indulge yourself as many pots of mussels as you like. There are 5 different flavours to choose from – White wine, Provencale, Laksa, Thai Green Curry and Tom Yam.

I like the sound of all-you-can-eat mussels, but how much mussels is too much before we all feel sick? The challenge has been set high by Helen‘s record of 4 pots, looks like we have a lot of homework to do and play catch up!

Clockwise L to R: black Belgium kilo pots ready to be tackled; Tom Yum mussels with lemon wedge; Creamy thai green curry

Without filling ourselves up too fast too soon, we stick to the soury flavoured mussels to open up our appetites. First pot I opt for the Tom Yum, Jenius goes for Thai Green Curry, and FFIchiban have the Laksa. The Lonefoodie not so lonely anymore, shows up not long after and join us for a pot of mussels Provencale.

I underestimated the size of the Belgian kilo pot, and the mount of mussels leaves me speechless. The tom yum soup is tangy and comes with a wedge of lemon if you want more zest to it. Each pot comes with a side of chunky fries, which is irresistibly crisp.

I finished the first pot without too much hiccups, handed it back full of empty shells and order Laksa as my second choice.

Clockwise L to R: menu dimly lit by candlelight; hot crisp chunky fries on side; lonefoodie with thumbs up; complimentary bread rolls if you still feeling hungry after mussels

The laksa mussels is disappointingly under flavoured. It is heavily coated in coconut cream with very subtle hint of chilli. A waiter comes over and offers us a basket of complimentary fresh bread rolls, which we are obliged to accept. No one touches it and fully focus on their own mussels; the bread rolls are soon neglected and turned cold.

Don’t let the size of the tiny mussels fool you, it is actually quite subtantial. It is all a blur and soon found myself digging into the third pot of mussels Provencale. The provencale is probably my favorite, a light Napoli sauce with great flavour of sweet tomatoes, garlic, shallots and the occassional shreds of bacons.

I managed to conquer three pots, just before my friend comes to pick me up and give me a lift back home. The birthday boy happily claimed the “Mussel King” title with his 4 pots of victory. On my way home, I feel sick and bloated, and the car motion almost send me to a spewing frenzy.

The all-you-can-eat-mussels orgy is definitely not for the faint hearted.

I honestly cannot believe you were able to get as much light and detail out as you have. Phenominal considering your photos makes the place look a lot brighter than it actually was.

Had a great time meeting up with yourself and the other two food bloggers. We’ll have to do it again sometime. The meeting up part, not the mussels. It’ll be a while for me to want to get into an all-you-can-eat mussels mood :)

I think 4 would be my limit, I have a habit of going overboard on the chips and bread!

@Simon: You need a DSLR! Come to the dark side…. Same, I think I am mussels out myself, but I am always up for another A-U-C-E event. Ribs? Buff wings?… options are open
@Simon Food Favourites: Yep I was surprise how subtantial it is.
@Yas: Yeah. I thought I am going to a rave party. Hehe it is like, “Watch out for the asians!!! They eat a lot!”
    @Helen (GrabYourFork): I posssibly could, but I wouldn’t dare to try. :)
@FFichiban: hehehe no thanks. I am over mussels now. Unless they are deep-fried mussels… yummm
@shez: Yeah mussels is not one of those that I would be addicted to, so 3 pots already exceed my limit of consuming something that I don’t even like that much.
@Howard: The chips are good though. But yeah no more mussels for me!

When I first heard of this I thought it was a gimmick. All you can eat mussles and wedges at B8 every Tuesday. I’ve been here a couple fo times since it’s a short walk from work and we can also hit the bowling alley to work of the extra kgs we’ve packed on.

I personally recommend you avoid the laksa (or if you must try it order one pot and share it among the table). The reason being that the coconut cream really makes you feel terribly bloated and full. It’s also the least tasty of the flavours.
